Garrard led a raid on Conyers 150 years ago during the Civil War, and the Rockdale County Historical Society along with the Major General Joseph Wheeler Camp #863 Sons of Confederate Veterans are hosting a commemorative event in observance of the sesquicentennial anniversary.

Hard Labor Creek Observatory

Hard Labor Creek Observatory offers monthly open houses to see glimpses of planets, starts, galaxies. The open houses typically occur a week after the new moon when viewing the night sky is best. Visitors will get to see some of the moon, but are also treated to images of planets and stars. The next open house is from 9 to 11 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 2. As the days grow shorter, the open houses begin earlier, as the time for twilight changes. Those interested in the open houses may visit www.chara.gsu.edu/HLCO to check for times and also directions.
