CONYERS — The Rockdale County school system is recognizing its school social workers this week during National School Social Work Week. Also, March is National Social Work Month and RCPS will celebrate the national theme, Social Workers Inspire Community Action.
“RCPS school social workers regularly seek community collaboration with key agencies in the Rockdale community that provide services to families and children,” said April Fallon, the RCPS director of community support. “RCPS school social workers stay current on changes within our community and advocate for revised policy and procedures when necessary.”

They also serve on community committees and attend meetings that have direct benefits to children and families, she said.
Their main referrals consist of issues related to student homelessness, child abuse, self harm, attendance and families needing resources, in addition to student poverty, family break ups, mental illness, disabilities, domestic violence and alcohol and substance abuse. They also provide student assessments to ensure that children are safe, Fallon said.
“Social workers operate from values that recognize each person is relevant to society and believe that, when needed, society should help each person achieve his or her fullest potential,” Fallon said. “Social workers are close to the critical events that shape the quality of American life. They are on the front lines, developing, advocating and delivering social programs that are responsive to such human needs. ... Social workers help people live more rewarding lives.”
In addition to schools recognizing their social workers this week, they also will be recognized at the Rockdale County Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m. March 18.
Board meetings are held in the board room at the RCPS administrative office complex, which is located at 954 N. Main St. in Olde Town Conyers.

Ironic that someone from California -- a state crumbling under the cost of its social programs and from which taxpayers are fleeing in droves -- would write in to defend social programs.
Watching- you're not even recognizing the social workers who are actually working at schools (which is what the article is about). Social workers in schools help students deal with the deaths of other students, handle stress and grades, and conflicts with peers. You should be appreciative of the group who IS actually helping.
It is unfortunate that the first writer has obviously been involved with "the system" and has this perception. There are many wonderful social workers out there who work very hard to help families and who fight for families' rights. You may want to seek therapy from one.
