Newton auxiliary needs items for rummage sale
Warmer temperatures, longer days and fresh air — they are all reminders that most everybody could do with a little spring cleaning. The Newton Medical Center Auxiliary is hoping to capitalize on those urges to clear out and clean up by hosting a Golden Anniversary Rummage and Treasures Sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 27 at Calvary Baptist Church Family Life Center, 4228 Mill St., at the intersection of U.S. Highway 278 and directly across from the hospital.

COVINGTON — Warmer temperatures, longer days and fresh air — they are all reminders that most everybody could do with a little spring cleaning.
“We want people to start getting their things together now,” said Martha Taylor, director of volunteer services with NMC.

Those donating items to the sale will receive an ID badge to enter and shop early at the Saturday sale.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to refurbish the hospital chapel.
“Because we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Auxiliary, we wanted to do something that would have lasting memories, so we’re doing renovations for our chapel,” Taylor said. She said those renovations were expected to include a new coat of paint, new floral arrangements and new lighting fixtures.
“We don’t have any idea how much money we’re going to make. We’d like to make $1,000; we’d like to make more, you never know,” she said.
Also, featured at the sale will be a cafe that will offer muffins and coffee in the morning and soup, chili and sandwiches for lunch.
“We’ll also have a lot of baked goods so people can shop and eat,” Taylor said.
In addition to cash payments at the rummage sale, credit cards, checks and payroll deduction for NMC employees will also be accepted.
Taylor said should more money be generated than is needed for chapel renovations, the surplus will be used to purchase CPR Anytime Kits that the Auxiliary is hoping to make available throughout the community.
“The kits contain a DVD, instruction booklet and a small mannequin and you can learn to use those tools to learn CPR in 20 minutes,” Taylor said. “Our first initiative for this is to provide kits for each parent with a child in our neonatal intensive care unit so they can train anybody who might care for the child. Our goal eventually is to train as many people as possible in Newton County.”
Taylor said the kits are $40 each and are for sale in the Auxiliary gift shop.
