CONYERS — A finished playhouse is among the prizes to be raffled off as part of the A.R. “Gus” Barksdale Boys & Girls Club’s 27th annual Super Saturday Night fundraiser to be held Aug. 7.
The prize, about 6 feet wide and 12 feet long, was built by Chad Schultz, Barksdale Boys & Girls Club board member, from materials donated by Lumber Liquidators, Cowan Hardware, Still Lumber and Lowe’s. The house includes a porch, bench and windows that would make it a dream for any child to have in their back yard.
The Super Saturday Night event will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Acuity Brands People Center at One Lithonia Way, off Lester Road in Conyers. A VIP reception begins at 6 p.m. followed at 7 p.m. by an evening of food and wine tasting, indoor and outdoor entertainment and a silent auction of items and services donated by local businesses.
The drawing for the playhouse will also be held that night. Raffle tickets are $5 each and available at local business sponsors and at the Boys & Girls Club at 1015 O’Kelly St., Conyers. Attendance at the event is not required to claim the prize.
The playhouse prize fits the mission of the Barksdale Boys & Girls Club. The organization is home to hundreds of local children ages 6 to 18 years old through its after-school and summer programs. The local Boys & Girls Club has 647 members and averages between 205 and 225 children at its O’Kelly Street facility daily.
Though there is plenty of play for the children, Barksdale Boys & Girls Club Executive Director Erly Saldano said the emphasis is on helping local children make it through school and guide them toward the path to becoming productive and valuable adults.
“There have been a lot of changes at the Boys & Girls Club — changes all for the good,” said Saldano, who became director last year. “Our focus has been on the children and to instill character, leadership skills, a healthy lifestyle and education.”
Speaking to the Rotary Club of Rockdale County recently, Saldano said the Barksdale Boys & Girls Club had recently adopted a new after-school program to raise high school graduation numbers. The after-school program was developed by the Center for a New Generation, which was co-founded by former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in 1992 for a local Boys & Girls Club while she was a professor at Stanford University.
Saldano calls it “an after-school tutorial program on steroids” that engages children through a computer program. The children must answer questions based on their school studies to access a video game.
He said the program has been very successful in helping middle school students prepare for high school and college in other Boys & Girls Clubs, and he hopes to continue that success here.
The Boys & Girls Club has also developed a partnership with the Rockdale County Public Schools. The schools donated 25 computers to the Boys & Girls Club and the club is looking to hire a school liaison to coordinate their after school activities with children’s class work.
