Annie Lura Young, age 85, of Covington, GA, died on June 2, 2005, after a brief illness. A beautiful and gracious lady, Mrs. Young was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. Born and raised in Conyers, GA, she was the second of four children of Frank and Sadie Almand. She and her first husband, the late John Franklin Hackney of Union Point, were the parents of Edmund Franklin Hackney, currently of Atlanta, and Jane Hackney Rippy of Ellijay. In addition to the role of mother and homemaker, she assisted her husband in business; together they were active in many of Covington's service Organizations, including the Rotary Club, Elks Club and First Presbyterian Church. After Mr. Hackney's death in 1964, she worked until retirement for Belk Department Store. In 1977, she married the late Robert Young of Covington, and their 25-year marriage brought them and their families much happiness. They enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, and were devoted to serving others, volunteering countless hours to Newton Medical Center Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, and their church. They led sing-alongs at local nursing homes, and were honored as Newton County's Volunteers of the Year. Mrs. Young is survived by her sister, Sarah Hooten; her sister and brother-in-law, Maggie and Bill Rainey; her brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Hattie Almand; her children, Ed and Clara Hackney and Jane and Tom Rippy; her step-children, Tom Young and David and Eva Young; her grandchildren, Greg Rippy, Kathryn and John Duckworth, Heather and John Gerald, Sarah and David Schmohl, John Hackney, Zsofia Young and Robi Young; great-grandchild, Evan Gerald; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today, June 4, at Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, A funeral service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 5, at First Presbyterian Covington, with burial to follow at Lawnwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to First Presbyterian Church of Covington or Newton Medical Center Auxiliary. Caldwell & Cowan, Covington.
