Local groups gather items for the needy

CONYERS -- Several community organizations are teaming up this holiday season to collect items that many residents need this year.

The Rockdale Coalition for Children and Families is helping organize several community groups to collect new toys, new clothes, financial donations and gift cards to distribute to families and children later this month.

"Our goal is to provide assistance to between 500 and 600 families who are facing difficult life challenges during these days of financial crisis," said Michael Hutcheson, executive director of the coalition. "Through the distribution of toys and other gifts, our ultimate goal is to inspire hope in the hearts of those who are hurting."

Community members interested in donating items for the drive can contact a community partner -- including Rockdale Emergency Relief, Rockdale Department of Family and Children Services, Rockdale United Way, Rockdale County Public Schools, First Baptist Church of Conyers, Victory Christian School, St. Pius Catholic Church and others -- or drop donations by 1400 Parker Road from 1 to 5 p.m. Dec. 17 and 18.

"It's everyone working together for the community," Hutcheson said.

Needy families can sign up at the Rockdale County DFACS office at 975 Taylor St. to make an appointment to pick up items at 1400 Parker Road from Dec. 19 through 21.
