COVINGTON - The Salem baseball team moved to 12-2 on the season and 10-2 in Region 8-AAAA play with a 12-2 over Eastside on Monday.The Seminoles scored four runs in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third and three in the fifth to evoke the mercy rule on Eastside (4-10, 4-8)."Our guys swung at good pitches today. They looked for strikes and attacked their pitches," Salem coach Chris Davis said.Salem's pitching was equally as impressive. Jake Dyer got the start on the mound and gave up one earned run on four hits in four innings of work. Dyer also fanned three batters. Brandon Crumbley came in to close it out in the bottom of the fifth and struck out the side.In the top of the first, Corey Womack scored on an Eastside error to put Salem up 1-0.Crumbley later made it 3-0 with a two-run single. The last run of the inning came off an RBI single by Logan Singleton.Eastside's Jared Trust smacked a double and later scored on an RBI groundout by Cameron Davenport to make it 4-1 in the bottom of the first.In the top of the second, Salem went up 5-1 after Dustin Dunlop doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an Eastside fielding error.Later that inning, Drew Dentler smashed a solo homer over the scoreboard in right field and put the Seminoles ahead 6-1.The last run of the inning came off an RBI double by Crumbley.In the third, Dentler's sacrifice fly out made it 8-1. Dyer then knocked in a run with an RBI single. Eastside cut into Salem's lead, but not by much, scoring off an RBI double by Joey Bruce in the bottom of the fourth. Bruce's hit plated Rashad Benton to make it 9-2.Salem's final runs of the contest came in the top of the fifth off a two-run single by Singleton and an RBI single by Jonathan Brewer.Eastside coach Michael Poor said Salem made plays and his team did not."Salem did a fantastic job of making the routine play. They were also very disciplined at the plate," he said. "We can't commit errors on routine plays and expect to win. We did not execute the fundamentals today."Eastside plays again Wednesday at home against Loganville. Salem is off Wednesday, but the Seminoles head to Jefferson on Friday to take on Jackson County.Brandon Evans can be reached at email@example.com.
