CONYERS -- A Rockdale County couple faces murder charges in connection with the death of the woman's 5-month-old baby boy who died from blunt force trauma, according to authorities.
Matea Chavez Mendez Stewart, 21, and William Grant Stewart, 21, of 362 Morris Drive in Conyers were arrested Thursday, according to Lt. Myra Pearell with the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.
Pearell told the Citizen deputies responded to the Stewarts' home on July 28 after William Stewart called 911 and reported that the infant boy was not breathing. Deputies performed CPR on the baby and a National EMS ambulance transported the child to Rockdale Medical Center, Pearell said.
"The infant was later transported to (Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston), where he was pronounced dead the next day," Pearell said in an e-mail response to questions. "The cause of death was blunt force trauma."
Pearell said an investigation began the same day deputies responded to the Stewarts' house.
The couple were charged last week in the death after RCSO investigators determined the child had multiple bone fractures in various stages of healing, according to Pearell.
The Stewarts face murder and cruelty to children charges.
Both were being held in Rockdale County Jail without bond.
