CPD looking into robbery at Wachovia

CONYERS -- Police are investigating -- with the help of eyewitnesses -- the robbery of a Rockdale County bank Monday morning.

The Conyers Police Department responded to a call at the Wachovia bank on Ga. Highway 138 at approximately 10:10 a.m., Police Chief David Cathcart said.

The robbery suspect entered the bank, jumped over the counter and demanded money from the teller.

Cathcart said the robber used a white bag "with some kind of handles on it" to collect the undisclosed amount of cash.

"The person, described as a black male approximately 6 foot, about 180 pounds, came in the bank wearing a brown ski mask, a dark sweatshirt top and blue jeans," Cathcart said. "He also had gloves on."

Cathcart could not verify whether the suspect was carrying a gun.

The robber ran out of the bank after the heist and fled on foot toward Regal Auto Wash at 1431 Old Salem Road.

Customers were in the bank at the time of the incident, and two witnesses followed the fleeing suspect.

Witnesses saw the suspect running behind the bank toward the car wash and into the parking lot of the area's new flea market, near a swap shop.

The suspect got in a black vehicle, where another black man was already in the car.

The vehicle was last seen turning right and heading down Old Salem Road, Cathcart said.

CPD set up a perimeter shortly after the incident, but the suspect had yet to be located as of mid-afternoon Monday.

Investigators questioned eyewitnesses and employees of area businesses after the incident.

Cathcart said talking with witnesses is "pretty common" and is important to investigation.
