CONYERS -- Schools are making improvements after system-wide site visits last month.
Officials with Rockdale County Public Schools in the offices of Teaching and Learning and School Improvement recently conducted principal data briefings at each of the 22 RCPS facilities, visiting with principals and school teams.
In the past, schools have had to report to the central office, said Rich Autry, chief academic officer in the office of Teaching and Learning. Now, system officials are visiting schools to assess quality control and review academic reports.
"We're here to help," Autry said, adding it is a lengthy undertaking. "We're here to make sure our schools are successful."
During the meetings, they review student achievement data and analyze it by grade, department and content areas. They also develop and assess school improvement goals, which were developed over the summer, and discuss safety nets, personnel concerns, school-based issues and central office support needs, among other topics.
RCPS officials also conduct focus walks to visit classrooms several times throughout the school year.

Thsoe focus walks should be unannounced if they want to see the true state of things.

The focus walks are a joke. The county does not have a clue what they are looking at in many of the classrooms that they visit. They are only interested to see if the standards are posted on the board, the students can explain what they are doing in terms of the standard and if vocabulary is posted on the wall. It is a bunch of busy work for the teachers to prove that they are talking about the standards and it takes away from the teachers ability to actually teach the students. The focus walks are simply a way for the county office empployees to partially justify their jobs. When county office employees actually have degrees in and experience teaching the subject that they are observing in order to critique teacher performance, the focus walks might be valid. The focus walks currently focus on distracting the students from what they are supposed to be working on so that the CO can ask them questions. Many of the students simply answer that they don't know the answer so that the CO person will leave them alone.
