Heritage teacher arrested in connection with relationship with student

CONYERS — A Heritage High School art teacher was arrested Friday after an investigation revealed that he allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a student.

The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office has charged Leslie Howard Mosley Jr., 36, of 65 Woodstone Lane in Covington, with sexual assault by a teacher engaged in sexual contact with another. Investigator Michael Camp said Mosley was arrested Friday afternoon after he was interviewed at the jail in connection with the allegations.

According to the RCSO incident report, Heritage Principal Greg Fowler informed School Resource Officer Damian Pearce that students from the Rockdale Career Academy had told him that Mosley possibly had inappropriate contact with a student at the school.

The student is a 16-year-old female, according to Camp.

“Right now he is charged with sexual assault by a teacher,” Camp said Monday. “The investigation is ongoing, so there could be additional charges as the investigation continues.”

Camp said it appears that the alleged relationship between student and teacher had been ongoing “at least this school year and possibly longer.”

If it is determined that the student was younger than 16 during the alleged relationship “that would add some charges to it, if that turns out to be the case,” Camp said.

The age of consent in Georgia is 16.

Camp said there is no indication that any inappropriate behavior between the student and teacher took place on campus.

Mosley was released from the Rockdale County Jail on $10,000 bond Monday.

Cindy Ball, director of Community Relations at Rockdale County Public Schools, said Mosley submitted a resignation on Thursday; however, the superintendent likely will recommend a termination to the school board. She added that the matter is still under investigation, so no other information is available at this time.

Ball said he was hired in August 1999 at Honey Creek Elementary School and has been a teacher at Heritage since July 2006.

I think we need to keep in mind there are innocent children and families that have been dragged into this. I am sad for all involved and think we can all agree this is now a family in crisis, not to mention the teenager involved. They could all use our prayers. We all as a community should now reach out to this family and show our support so as to not kick them while they are down. For all of those who will be raising there hands high this Easter Sunday and Praising Jesus for all that he has given for us, in that spirit, let us raise up this family in prayer and extend the mercy we hope to receive when it is our time. I know this family and believe we should not continue to victimize them with negative comments, the children deserve better and JESUS expects NOTHING LESS FROM US! The rest, we leave to him. So, I agree that the victims in this scenario (notice I said "victims" - e.g. the child, the child's family, this teacher's family, etc) need our support. My comment is clearly directed at this predator who no matter the situation put his hands on child, someone who he was trusted to educate, not molest. Innocent until proven guilty......I get that, however if it is found that this man is quilty. I repeat. PUT. HIM. UNDER. THE. JAIL. he committed a crime, a crime that has no excuse to have been committed.

I was simply, with tact, trying to suggest, his children (who are the innocent victims right along with the misled teenager) might be reading this, can we take the high road as it has already been observed they are struggling with this and feeling the sting of harsh words against their father.

OK. Something needs to be changed in our schools. I guarantee every teacher knows the consequences if they do this but some of them still do it. We need to figure out a way to protect the kids from this type of thing. It is becoming way too common. I bet this guy shook his head and said tsk tsk when he watched other teachers fall this way on the news in the past. Yet he fell into the same trap. WHat is happening?

This is just happening everywhere, all the time now. All your schooling/college goes right down the poop chute. Never thought the teenage girl was gonna brag to her friends? Derp Derp.

KInda funny though, if this happened a few months ago the resource officer could have said "Hey buddy, join the club!"

What the hell else is going on with this school?

Honestly this school has fallen by the wayside the past couple of years. Sad to see what was an excellent school fall this far.

Honestly, child molesters alleged and otherwise, have always existed in one form or another, I'm just glad that we find out about them. And, you forgot about the Lost Children of Rockdale...which was also in the Heritage High School community.

Thanks frizzlefry but my daughter saw the program in school for health class. It's funny that all the kids in class knew exactly where the neighborhoods were.

I dont know what you mean when you say "You forgot about the lost children of Rockdale." I don't know of anyone who has forgotten about it. The question is, why are you bringing it up? It is a completely different situation and involved different people. Are you just the type of person that likes to pile up bad stuff? What does it have to do with this situation?

I was replying to poster "matthines". You can read the comment yourself. It implies that Heritage has gone down in the past two years. Which is always a silly comment to me but I thought that I would add a little more to conversation.

One of the things that makes me mad in a situation like this is the assumption that when a perv is exposed in one place, people assume that everyone is a perv. And it really doesn't make me irritated with the people making that assumption. It makes me irritated with the perv. The people making the assumption are just grossed out and fearful for their kids. The perv was supposed to represent himself as trustworthy and safe, which is what you expect of teachers, right? Thanks for making teachers look bad, man. We appreciate it.

It makes me sad to see stuff like this happen. Mr.Les Mosley is a good man(or so I thought). I've known him for since he started working there and would have never thought this possible. My prayers go out to BOTH families involved and that things work out for the best
