Community invited to Chamber education event

CONYERS -- Area businesses, local organizations and community members are invited to get more involved in education.

For the fifth year, the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce will hold its Engage in Education event, I Can Do That!

"Education is one of top 3 economic drivers," said Scott Hartsell, education committee chair for the Chamber. "In order for us to have a qualified workforce, we need businesses and the local community involved to help guide the direction of these students."

The event is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Rockdale Career Academy, which is located at 1064 Culpepper Drive, off Parker Road, in Conyers. It includes a lunch prepared by RCA culinary arts students.

At the event, students and current businesses partners will talk about their experience volunteering and assisting schools and present to guests opportunities available to the community.

Opportunities include Partners in Education, mentoring, work-based learning, academic boosters, the Foundation for Excellence in Education and the Parent Advisory Council, among others.

In addition to services like mentoring, Hartsell hopes that businesses will help show students their businesses and provide them information about having the right skills and why they are studying certain topics.

"We need to show them the benefits of what we have to offer and get them to understand what it takes to work today," he said.

After the event, a tour of RCA is available.

It is sponsored by the Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council.

Guests must RSVP to the event by Thursday by registering online at www.conyers-rockdale.com or by e-mail to katy@conyers-rockdale.com.

If would be so nice if organizations like the Chamber would schedule these events where the whole community could attend, not just those who are retired, own their own businesses or non-profit, or who are close to drop by on their lunch hour. Most of our community, work during the day, and while we'd love to attend some of the functions, simply cannot. I guess this is primarily a local business event, not intended for the community at large. That's a shame.

I think that Chambers of COMMERCE are primarily a private organizations of merchants and businesses. I don't think it's a government entity, open, or functioning, for the public at large.

It is usually made up of dues-paying members who own, or manage local businesses.

You're right, I still would have liked to attend. It's being sponsored the Conyers-Rockdale Economic Development Council so I figured it was a business and community member event, sponsored by local government. I wasn't trying to be negative, just disappointed that more of us couldn't attend to learn more about these programs. I'm sure there will be other opportunities.
