Firefighters with Rockdale County Fire and Rescue got a chance to test their skills during training exercises held Tuesday afternoon at the former Clothes Closet building on Oakland Avenue. The training began with a demonstration of the effectiveness of residential sprinkler systems in a live fire situation. Here, Chief of Operations Chief Joel Yodar watches as the fire he just lit for the demonstration spreads throughout a room set up for that purpose. -- Staff Photo: Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

Firefighters will be able to use the former Clothes Closet building for training for about a month before the building is demolished. Firefighters are shown here cutting a hole in the roof to release smoke, which is how they would react in a real house fire situation. The county-owned Clothes Closet has been deemed unfit for habitation and too expensive to repair. -- Staff Photo: Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith
