CONYERS — The Carmike Cinema on Dogwood Drive was evacuated Friday morning after a bomb threat was received at Carmike Cinemas corporate offices. The threat did not specify which theater was involved.
Only employees were present at the Conyers Carmike Cinema when the threat was called in at about 10:45 a.m., according to Conyers Police Department Lt. Jackie Dunn. The theater was evacuated by police and personnel from Rockdale County Fire and Rescue, he said. After a search of the facility, it was reopened about 90 minutes later.
Roads and parking lots in the area were also closed to traffic during the search.
Because the threat did not specify a particular theater, Dunn said Carmike took a broad approach to the evacuations.
"(Carmike) has 240-something theaters, so they have chosen to evacuate any of those theaters that were occupied, and each jurisdiction is handling them independently and the FBI has been monitoring the overall situation," Dunn said Friday morning.
Carmike Cinemas is based in Columbus.
