CONYERS -- Three of the county's four middle schools will get additions or renovations next year.
The Rockdale County Board of Education recently approved an architect and engineer for the projects.
The school board approved, as recommended by Rockdale County Public Schools Superintendent Richard Autry, the architecture firm Cunningham, Forehand, Matthews & Moore Architects Inc. of Atlanta for the addition and renovation projects at Conyers and Edwards middle schools.
The two projects are identical.
The renovations include the expansion of the kitchen, serving area and commons area and the relocation of administrative spaces. Additions include the consolidation of connection program spaces, and are expected to include space for special programs, according to Autry.
A 2013 Capital Outlay Application also will provide funding for HVAC upgrades to both facilities.
The architecture firm is the same one currently handling the Rockdale County High School alterations and additions project and was the firm for previous addition projects at Conyers and Edwards middle schools.
RCPS will pay 5 percent of the total construction cost of each project as the architect's fee; the cost has not yet been announced, but it is expected to exceed $1.5 million.
The school board also recently approved the engineering firm Raymond Engineering LLC of Conyers for the Memorial Middle School project.
The project will replace the balance of the roof and skylight upgrades; part of the roof was replaced in 2007.
The firm was a consultant for previous projects at Shoal Creek and Sims elementary schools and Heritage High School, and it also has provided third-party inspections on numerous RCPS projects.
RCPS will pay 5.5 percent of the total construction cost of the project as the fee; the cost has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be about $1 million.
All of the projects were included in the previous RCPS five-year facilities plan and were rolled into SPLOST III.
