"It sure would be nice for someone to investigate how our county taxes are paying for Cherokee Run Golf Course, especially while other things go unattended in the county. Could it be that a portion of the fees for individuals to golf at Cherokee Run is being underwritten by the county -- if so, this would be a waste of taxpayers dollars, just throwing money to the wind. Also, do we have a county golf course being given an unfair tax status that other businesses in the county are not afforded? Does anyone care to look into county business practices to see that our monies are being used in a way that would benefit the entire community instead of a few golfers?"

Editor's note: Cherokee Run is owned by the city of Conyers.

"But, what if the Mayan calendar is right?"

"We need some forward thinking in Rockdale and Newton County. Five states announced Monday that they will add at least 300 hours of learning time to the calendar in some schools starting in 2013. Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee will take part in the initiative, which is intended to boost student achievement and make U.S. schools more competitive on a global level. A technical and Science High school that is shared by all schools."

"Just ate a Ritz Cracker. I dare you to name something better."

"I am new to Conyers. Can someone tell me the story about the the Big Pace Arrow RV always parked by the Starbucks? There has to be a story behind this. Does he live there?"

If you really are new to Conyers (and not just the guy in the RV looking for more publicity), ask the guys behind the counter at Starbucks. They'll give you the low down.

To the "forward thinking" contributor who wants more school hours.

Rockdale and Newton Counties are NOT "states", so you are comparing apples and oranges.

These "states" that have adopted the 300 extra hours are contemplating taking up the tiny bit of summer vacation that remains in the school system.

Sometimes "better hours" is the solution, not "more hours".

Generations of people have successfully completed high school with even less hours than currently attended, mainly because the discipline was there, parental support and involvement was there, and teachers were beholden to the students educations and not unions and pay raises.

So, if such a proposal does filter down to Georgia (which includes Rockdale and Newton), I don't think the "test scores", or the childrens' education will show enough improvement to justify the increase.

Maybe those other states are out of money to throw at the problem, and now are throwing extended hours...meanwhile the elephant in the room is still there, and shows no signs of leaving.

A mere 5 posts... You can tell the election is over. And a Captain's Wafer is far superior to a Ritz Cracker, though both are in fact great...

County taxpayers need to know that Chairman Oden has created yet another new position in his office so that he can bring in another "friend" formerly employed by the City of Atlanta. This new position is supposedly to be Oden's "speech writer"??? Are you kidding me? We are the 2nd smallest county in the state. Someone has to explain to me how Oden needs speeches written for him. He speaks to the Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club and a few homeowner associations..Really...a speech writer?? The other friend he brought from the City of Atlanta just got elected Tax Commissioner. Did we forget the Hadley used to be Oden's chief of staff? Voters blindly put this man back into office - now he has free rein to turn Rockdale County into a corrupt political arena like the City of Atlanta. I really wish that voters would research the candidates before just casting a vote based on "other" factors.

Wait, didn't oden bring his experiences to Rockdale? I seem to recall he was previously self-employed as a motivational speaker. So are you saying he can't write his own speeches? But wasn't he a successful motivational speaker before joining the CEO rank of Rockdale?

Does he have a driver yet? He's such a busy man, you know, and it's so hard to find a parking space at Stonecrest when you're there at midnight on county business...

Didn't he create the chief of staff job to do his job. Now a speech writer! What talents did he bring to this job?
