Stone Mountain man killed in Christmas Eve accident

CONYERS — A Stone Mountain man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Christmas Eve in Rockdale County.

Virgil Thomas, 47, had left a family gathering when he crashed his vehicle on Old Covington Road in wet, foggy weather at about 8:50 p.m. Family members told the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office that Thomas was unfamiliar with the area.

According to the RCSO, Thomas's vehicle left the roadway and struck at least three mailboxes, ejecting him from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

When you leave the roadway, hit three mailboxes and get ejected from the vehicle it is not being unfamiliar with the area. It is speed, being under the influence, or both. Lucky he did not kill someone else.

Allow me to enlighten you Christopher, he was not drinking, he was not high, the report is not accurate, he was killed when he struck a tree. Unless you know something that was not found in his toxicology report or that the medical examiner's office could not find, I suggest you keep your rude ignorant comments to yourself. He is a much loved member of someones family and we are grieving right now, so for you to spew anything other than condolences is beyond disrespectful.

My deepest sympathies. Where on Old Covington Rd did the accident happen?

This was a tragic accident that has been made light of thanks to another inaccurate RCSO report that taints the facts and truth. My condolences to the man's grieving family and friends. Inaccurate reporting is yet another reflection of the nonprofessional office that we as citizens have had to endure. We should all demand that our elected officials behave professionally and shame on those who make sport of the tragedies of others.
