The staff at Tasty Treats Italian Ice, which recently acquired Soups on the Side, formerly Roly Poly, includes, owners, husband and wife team, bottom left, Noreen Carrasquillo, and, top left, and Destry Carrasquillo, along with manager Chris Ballas and employee Hannah Calhoun.

Patrons of the Roly Poly, formerly located on Ga. Highway 138 S. in the Kroger Shopping Center, can now find similar sandwiches, though under different names and with some variations in the ingredients, at the Tasty Treats Italian Ice just across the road.

The sandwich shop, which most recently changed its name to Soups on the Side, merged with the Italian ice business, located at 1680 Ga. Highway 138, Suite D, in the TJ Maxx Shopping Center.

The two businesses complement each other, said Destry Carrasquillo, owner of the newly merged companies. Tasty Treats is busy in the late afternoon going into the evening and the sandwich component is busy during lunch and early dinner hours.

Also, Tasty Treats is busy during the summer, a time when the sandwich shop slows down.

"It's a great combination," said Carrasquillo, a native of New York who has lived in Conyers with his wife and two sons for the past six years.

The Ballas family ran the Roly Poly and then Soups on the Side for the last several years. Health problems in the Ballas family led them to sell the Soups on the Side business to Carrasquillo.

Chris Ballas, who worked with his parents at Roly Poly and Soups on the Side, is now employed at Tasty Treats, running the soup and sandwich part of the business.

Carrasquillo said the businesses often catered the same events, and the two families shared more than a business relationship.

"It's not just business, it's a friendship," he said.

Tasty Treats serves 50 flavors of Italian ice, 20 flavors of ice cream, milkshakes and sundaes. With the addition of the Soups on the Side menu, the business now also sells cold wraps, hot wraps, sandwiches and several different kinds of soup each day.

Carrasquillo said he not only sells his ice cream products from his restaurant but he also caters special events, selling his cold treats from his ice cream trucks. He's visited festivals, parties, school fundraisers, youth athletic events and customer appreciation days.

"Because the community embraces us, that's what's kept us going these last three years," he said.

Carrasquillo began selling the sandwich shop items at Tasty Treats this past Monday and business has been brisk. A sign at the former Soups on the Side directs customers to the new location in the TJ Maxx Shopping Center.

"They've been coming. We've been unexpectedly busy at lunch. It's a good thing," Carrasquillo said.

The sandwich menu includes chicken, turkey, beef and ham wraps, all of which use Boar's Head lunch meat, "a healthier product, a leaner product," Carrasquillo said.

There are also a variety of veggie wraps on the menu, all of which are "vegan friendly," Chris Ballas said.

Carrasquillo said his business stands out from others because it delivers and is available to cater any type of event with sandwich platters and Italian ice.

Carrasquillo said he made room for the sandwich shop at his Italian ice location by removing some freezers, and he hopes to get a larger restaurant space in the future.

"We've kind of compressed it beautifully," he said.

Tasty Treat Italian Ice is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 8 p.m.
