ATLANTA (AP) -- Law enforcement agencies would be required to auction off confiscated or abandoned guns to the public under a proposal from a Georgia lawmaker.
Sen. Don Balfour said Thursday that his legislation would end the destruction of guns by some police departments that seize weapons. The proceeds would go back to the local or state government.
The Republican lawmaker from Snellville said the National Rifle Association supports his bill.
Under the proposal, state officials would first be required to return stolen guns to their owners. Agencies with seized firearms would be required to auction them off at least once every six months.

I had to go and check my calendar - to see if it was an Aprils Fools joke. Nope must be real then. This Don Balfour fellow needs a brain check or needs voting out because he obviously lives in a world that none of us (the general public) have any knowledge of - how dumb is it to recirculate confiscated guns, knives or anything like that. At least some Police forces have the smarts to destroy them so that they can't get into the wrong hands and kill people like police officers and 'normal' people. But I expect this Balfour bloke does not live like the rest of us. And shame on the Citizen for just posting a story without putting something like this into context.

Is selling guns bad? I am sure they arent planning on selling them to elementary kids and gang memebers. I am sure they will follow the normal legal prodecures. Are you against all gun sales? This auction sounds like a used gun sale. Just like the gun shows or pawn shops or surplus stores.

Four things come to mind because you did not post my last comment.
1) You are supporters of the NRA or scared of what they might do if you did post it 2) You are scared of republicans 3) Or have republican sympathies 4) Can’t take criticism because you did not do your jobs as journalists and put this story in any context
Shame on you - no wonder your subscriptions keep going down

Nope, not against guns sales, been using and around them from a very young age, many school awards for shooting. However, I'm sure the origional guns were not sold to school kids or gang members either, they just ended up in the wrong hands so were confiscated. So why put them back into circulation when they came off the street for a reason. If by some horrible and tragic irony these particular guns should end up in the wrong hands it should hang heavy on the hearts of those that pass this law.

You folks are not thinking like a politician here. Money, money, money is the only reason they want to auction these off. All about the Benjamins here.

If the local departments must confiscate, store, condemn, and then auction the guns why should the state get part of the profits? Let all the money go back to the department that does all the work.
