Caution urged with fireworks

CONYERS -- As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, Rockdale County Fire and Rescue is cautioning residents to take care with fireworks during the current hot, dry weather.

Public Information Officer Sharon Webb offered the following precautions:

-- If you plan on using fireworks make sure they are legal. (Illegal fireworks consist of any item that explodes or rises in the air.)

-- Never light fireworks indoors or near dry grass.

-- Do not wear loose fitting clothing while using fireworks.

-- Always read the directions and warning labels on fireworks. If it is not marked with contents, directions and a warning label, do not light it.

-- Supervise children around fireworks at all times.

-- Keep a water hose or bucket of water close by.

-- Make sure fireworks are extinguished.

"Please use extreme caution with fireworks to avoid injuries," said Webb. "Remember even with the rain the ground and trees are still very dry. A small spark can lead to an out-of-control fire in seconds."

Additional precautions: Don't hold fireworks between your teeth. Never use them to light a cigarette. Don't tie them to your shoes. If the box of fireworks says, "ACME" on the side, something may go very wrong. If your friends prefaces a fireworks display with, Hey y'all watch this, something WILL go very wrong. -- On second thought, ignore all precautions. This paper needs stories, and I need a few good laughs.
