Two candidate forums slated

CONYERS -- Rockdale County voters have two more opportunities to hear political candidates speak out on local issues at upcoming forums.

The Rockdale County chapter of the NAACP has announced it will partner with the Progressive Club and the NewRock Legal Society to sponsor forums on July 14 and July 21.

The July 14 forum will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Bald Rock Baptist Church, 2284 Old Covington Road NE, Conyers. This forum will feature candidates for Rockdale Board of Education, Superior Court judge, Magistrate Court judge, Probate Court judge and clerk of Superior Court.

The July 21 forum will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at Peeks Chapel Baptist Church, 3185 Old Salem Road SE, Conyers. This forum will feature candidates for sheriff, Board of Commissioners, state Senate and state House of Representatives.

Both events are free and open to the public. The format will allow members of the audience to write questions on post cards and the questions will be asked by the moderator.

As of Monday, candidates who had said they would participate in the July 14 forum include: Tim Williams, Post 2, Rockdale Board of Education; Darrell Stephens, Post 4, BOE; Cornell Brown, Post 5, BOE; Willie Washington, Post 5, BOE; Mandy North, Post 1, BOE; Brad Smith, Post 2, BOE; Kimberly Baker, Post 2, BOE; Sharon Pharr, Post 4, BOE; Rodney Fanner, Post 5, BOE; Rudy Horn, incumbent, Rockdale Magistrate judge; Phinea Aten, Magistrate judge; Lillis Brown, incumbent, Rockdale Probate Court judge; Caycie Dix, Probate judge; Holly Bowie, Rockdale clerk of Superior Court; Ruth Wilson, incumbent, Superior Court clerk; Robert Mumford, Rockdale Superior Court judge; and Earnelle Winfrey, Superior Court judge.

Those who have indicated they will participate in the July 21 forum include: Oz Nesbitt, incumbent, Post 1, Rockdale Board of Commissioners; Jerry Shepperd, Post 1, BOC; Tom Harrison, Post 1, BOC; Sam Smiley, Post 1, BOC; Doreen Williams, state House District 92; Kathy Harvey, House District 92; Jason Hill, chairman, Rockdale BOC; Brian Jenkins, chairman, BOC; Richard Oden, incumbent, chairman, BOC; Jeff Wigington, incumbent, Rockdale County sheriff; Eric Levett, sheriff; Tonya Anderson, state House District 92; Doreen Carter, House District 92; Pam Dickerson, House District 113; Sherri Washington, House District 92; Pamela Stephenson, incumbent, state House District 90; Nelva Lee, Senate District 17.

I wish I could go to these things but I work. Hopefully the paper will hit the high points. Could the Citizen sponsor a forum and ask questions submitted by readers? The print the responses? That would be cool

I was thinking that too. Its amaziong that the members of the NewRock Legal Society dont attend other forums but will these two. Were they just waiting for home field advantage?
