Covington Police Officer Bob Yarbrough was shaken up as the result of a traffic crash that occurred on U.S. Highway 278 about 1:45 a.m. Friday when he was rear-ended by a suspected drunk driver.
Officer Yarbrough’s patrol vehicle was stopped while he was backing up an officer on a traffic stop. A vehicle driven by Conson Wilson Starr, 37, of 280 Fox Meadow Drive struck the police car sending the unit approximately 35 to 40 feet.
Starr was transported to Rockdale Hospital where he was treated and released to the Newton County Detention Center. He was charged by the Georgia State Patrol with following too closely and DUI.
“The impact was extensive. We are very fortunate that Officer Yarbrough was not severely injured. Our police vehicle is a total loss. Starr indicated to officers on the scene that he had been drinking and was intoxicated,” CPD Public Information Officer Capt. Ken Malcom said. “Video from the two patrol vehicles on the scene verified the blue lights were on on both our patrol units for about a minute before the impact occurred.
The patrol units were positioned in an area of U.S. Highway 278 where they were highly visible for several hundred feet to the oncoming motoring public.”
