World War II veteran and former Rockdale County Sheriff J.T. Wallace was laid to rest Wednesday afternoon in ceremonies conducted at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel, with interment following at Green Meadow Memorial Gardens. Wallace's flag-draped casket was transported from the chapel to the gravesite by a horse-drawn hearse as  officers with the Sheriff's Office  provided an honor guard. American Legion Post 77 provided military honors. Wallace was sheriff of Rockdale County for 20 years, retiring in 1980. He died Saturday at the age of 89. -- Staff Photos Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

Shown here at the funeral of former Rockdale Sheriff J.T. Wallace is the Fallen Soldier Memorial consisting of a helmet, inverted rifle and combat boots. The Fallen Soldier Memorial was typically used as a grave marker and to honor fallen soldiers. Wallace served in World War II where he was wounded three times.
