Col. Roy Reid, who was a B-17 pilot during World War II and was shot down during the bombing of Pearl Harbor, was behind the controls of a B-17 again Thursday at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. Reid boarded the Memphis Belle as part of the Liberty Foundation’s 2012 Salute to Veterans tour. The Memphis Belle, a restored World War II Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a newly restored Curtis P-40E Warhawk will be available for public flights and ground tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 9 and 10 at DeKalb-Peachtree. B-17 flights take 45 minutes with about 30 minutes in flight. The cost is $410 for Liberty Foundation members and $450 for non-members. A 15- to 20-minute flight in the P-40 costs $1,150. The Liberty Foundation is a non-profit flying museum and funds generated help offset the costs of operating the aircraft. For more information, email Scott Maher at smaher@libertyfoundation.org.
