CONYERS -- Running in a road race on the Saturday after Thanksgiving has become a tradition for many people who use the event to celebrate the life of Aubrae Gunderson. A Heritage High School cross country athlete, Gunderson was struck and killed by a car in September 2005 while training with her team.
The route for the Nov. 24 race starts at Heritage High School and was designed to travel past the accident site as a remembrance. The 1-mile fun run begins at 8:30 a.m. with the 5k Walk/Run following at 9 a.m. This will be the fifth year for the running of the High Heel Hustle. "If you don't walk or run this is something to see" was something overheard from an attendee last year. There will be a Cinderella fitting for those who want to join the Hustle but are short on heels.
Registration is available online at Aubraegunderson.com and is open until Nov. 21. Race day registration is $20 and opens at 7:30 a.m. The long-sleeved collectors' shirts associated with the event are guaranteed to all those who are pre-registered. If you are not able to attend there is a "phantom runner" category that will still allow you to receive a shirt or you can make a donation at Aubraegunderson.com.
Every year, the annual Aubrae Gunderson Memorial 5K Walk & Run recognizes the elementary school with the most participants. The winner of the 2011 event was Lorraine Elementary led by Brian Smith's PE program. Dan Gunderson, Aubrae's father, commented that getting students involved at a high level of participation academically and athletically is a core belief of the The Aubrae Gunderson Financial Assistance Foundation. The foundation presented Smith and the Lorraine PE program with another $100 check.
