The softball teams from Alcovy and Rockdale are headed to the Class AAAAAA state tournament. But first, they had a bit of an inter-county rivalry to sort out.
Chelsea Murphy pitched a complete game, three-hitter, striking out nine as Alcovy defeated Rockdale, 4-0 in the Region 2-AAAAAA championship game.
Alcovy, which improved to 25-4-1 by beating Rockdale for the second time in the tournament, secured the league's No. 1 seed when the state playoffs begin this week. Rockdale is the No. 2 seed and both schools will host a best-of-three first-round series.
Rockdale (16-14) had fought back after the initial loss to Alcovy with three consecutive victories, out-scoring Lovejoy, Newton and Luella by a combined 35-6. But Murphy, a senior right-hander, permitted just three singles and two walks in a 104-pitch effort.
The top three batters in the Alcovy order-Kalia Johnson, Kia Sorrells and Murphy-did most of the damage as the trio went 5-for-10 with three RBIs. The Tigers led just 1-0 on Murphy's RBI-single in the fifth, but sent eight batters to the plate in a three-run sixth.
In the state tournament, Alcovy will host the Region 3-AAAAAA No. 4 seed, while Rockdale will entertain the region's No. 3 seed.
