CONYERS -- Unfortunately for the Rockdale football team, last weekend's game was indicative of how the 2012 season has gone for the Conyers school. Following a shutout victory in the Region 2-AAAAAA opener over Morrow in Week 4, which snapped a 13-game losing streak, Rockdale ran into a buzzsaw in Hampton.
Lovejoy, fresh off an appearance in the 2011 state championship game, dominated Rockdale 41-0 in region play at Twelve Oaks Stadium. The host Wildcats did it with offense -- tailback Travis Custis, a top-60 prospect in the state of Georgia by rivals.com, reached the end zone four times -- and with defense (83 total yards and only three first downs surrendered).
The goodwill from Rockdale's win over Morrow disappeared in the loss to Lovejoy. Quarterback Zuri Minifield left with an injury in the second quarter and the Bulldogs were dominated in every aspect of the game by the bigger, quicker Wildcats.
Despite the loss, Rockdale, 1-5 overall but 1-1 in league play, has a chance to build a respectable record by season's end. Friday, Luella travels to Reid Stadium in the first meeting between the schools. Despite last weekend's blowout win over Druid Hills, the Lions are also 1-5. Winnable games against Newton and Druid Hills also remain on the schedule.
