Wayne Hurst, 69, of Rockdale County, died Thursday, October 4, 2012 after suffering from cancer. Born in Ridgeland, SC he graduated from Wade Hampton High School, Hampton County, SC in 1961. He received an Associate Degree in Architectural Engineering Technology from Southern Tech in 1966. After college Wayne served in the United States Air Force for four years including a tour of duty to Vietnam in 1969. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he worked for the University of Delaware as Assistant Director for Maintenance, Housing Division. After his retirement he suffered from a ruptured aneurysm which resulted in a permanent brain injury disability. Wayne was a long time member of the Newton/Rockdale Brain Injury Support Group. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elydia Hurst. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Steve Wilson of Pedricktown, NJ; son and daughter-in-law, John and Alexandra Hurst of Smyrna, DE; grandsons, Gavin and Joseph Hurst; and his sister and long-time caregiver, Greta Ann Hurst of Rockdale Co. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 14, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Simon’s Episcopal Church, Conyers, GA. Interment of his ashes will be in Grahamville, SC.
