Albert W. Scott, 95, Moorhead, MN, formerly Tucson, AZ and Rapid City, SD, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2012, with family members by his side at Sanford Health Palliative Care in Fargo, ND. Albert W. Scott was born May 20, 1917 in Rapid City, SD to Henry and Carrie Scott. He graduated from Rapid City High School and attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Al joined the Navy in 1938. A Pearl Harbor survivor aboard the USS California, he also participated in the battles of the Midway, Corral Sea and the Solomon Islands. In 1943 he entered the naval aviation flight school, received his wings in 1944, and met the love of his life, Bertenis (Betty) Scott in Santa Barbara, CA. They were married July 4, 1944. In January 1946, Al was discharged from active duty and joined his father at Rapid Electric Co. until 1967. Al and Betty raised three children, were active in the Cleghorn School District, Canyon Lake Methodist Church and the Community Service Center, while building their home on Chapel Lane. He loved his Hammond organ and was an active member of the organ club, hosting many events at their home. Al and Betty moved to Tucson, AZ in 1972 where he worked as an electrician until his retirement in 1982. They enjoyed Arizona’s warm sun, and Al’s love for the sea was satisfied with many cruises on the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents, Henry and Carrie; and sister, Helen Cottingham. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Cooper, Willmar, MN; son, Greg (Dianne) Scott, Moorhead, MN; and daughters Gail Scott, Conyers, GA; and Lea Scott, Philadelphia, PA. Al has 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. November 5, 2012, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD with Reverend Jenene Earl officiating and military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.
