CONYERS — A 20-year-old man was shot and wounded Thursday morning after he reportedly brandished a weapon at a Georgia State Patrol trooper during a traffic stop.
Gordy Wright, spokesman for the State Patrol, said the suspect has been identified as Cardal Dwayne Haywood of a Covington address.
According to Wright, the trooper attempted to make a traffic stop for following too closely on Salem Road at about 11:20 a.m.
"The vehicle pulled around in back of the (QuickTrip) and the trooper got him channeled and had the driver's side blocked, but he bailed out on the passenger side," said Wright. "(The suspect) turned around and brandished a weapon."
Wright said the trooper wounded the suspect with one shot to the thigh.
It was unknown Thursday afternoon how many shots were fired in the incident, Wright said.
"The GBI is doing the interview with (the trooper)," he said. "We're not real sure right now."
Wright said it was also unknown if the suspect faced any outstanding charges. The suspect's vehicle, a Mitsubishi Gallant, would be searched once it was towed to GBI headquarters, he said.
The trooper is assigned to the Atlanta Motorcycle Unit and was on his way to work driving a marked car, Wright said.
"He would have picked up the motorcycle once he got to the office," he said.
The investigation has been turned over to the GBI and the Special Investigation Division with the Georgia Department of Public Safety

Poor Cardel, he was probably just going to QT to get some skittles and sweet tea when he was harassed by the man. So sad what Rockdale has become. What has changed in the last 10 years to make it this bad? Everyone knows but its not politicly correct to say. Time to check the census bureau and move accordingly.

Christopher, what has changed is the black population and im against political correctness. Look at all the mostly black areas and you will see the same thing going on, its a violent culture. I know all blacks are not this way so dont go there with the race card it does not fly anymore.

Does this mean we'll get a visit from Jessie and Sharpton?

Jessie and Sharpton use their own people and they're too ignorant to understand what is going on. Look what they did in the Zimmerman deal in Florida. Trayvon was just a thug, look at his track record and he attacked Mr. Zimmerman. Mr. Zimmerman had no choice but to defend himself.

Okay, let me say this really slow for those of you that have a hard time understanding English..if you point a gun at a police officer....expect to get shot. Plain and simple. Now any questions?

I have mixed feelings about the leg wound. I don't want to say I wish it had been more serious until I know what his intentions were and his background but I am very tired of these guys terrorizing our town. AK-47? Are you joking? How many times Have we all been to that QT? This irks me. This is supposed to be Conyers, not Rwanda.
