CONYERS -- A Covington man who was shot by a Georgia State Patrol trooper Thursday after he allegedly brandished an AK-47 during a traffic stop has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and faces at least six other charges.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation filed the assault charge against Cardal Dwayne Haywood, 20. The GBI is conducting the investigation into the shooting. GBI spokesman John Bankhead said other charges by the GBI may be pending.
In addition to the GBI charge, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office has six charges pending against Haywood. Those charges are: following too closely, fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce, possession of drug-related object, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime.
Haywood was shot once in the thigh Thursday morning after the trooper attempted to make a traffic stop on Haywood's Mitsubishi Gallant for following too closely on Salem Road.
According to Gordy Wright, spokesman for the GSP, "The vehicle pulled around in back of the (QuickTrip) and the trooper got him channeled and had the driver's side blocked, but he bailed out on the passenger side," said Wright. "(The suspect) turned around and brandished a weapon."
Bankhead declined to comment Friday on whether or not the suspect had fired the AK-47.
Bankhead said Thursday that Haywood is a convicted felon and cannot legally possess a firearm.
Haywood was taken by a Lifeflight helicopter to an Atlanta area hospital Thursday. He remained hospitalized Friday.

Speaking of charges, someone needs to charge that suspect about 10 grand for the helicopter ride and all the other stuff.

Absolutely right! Why did we life flight someone who took a shot in the thigh anyway. They should have drug him over to Rockdale and made him wait in the ER with the other deadbeats shoe use that as their doctors office.

Don't worry, after the lawsuit, the perp will have plenty of money to pay for the chopper.

Hey, what's this guy's wrap sheet look like? He's a convicted felon because of what? Where's Dirty Harry when you need him? At age 20 and already been to prison once on a felony we can see how good his first punishment reformed him.

It won't change until the people have the courage to say "no" to the ones who won't, or, are afraid to say "no" to the parasites of this country.
We all know who the "enablers" are, and it's time to put aside "political correctness", and do what it takes to get America back.
Even them, it'll probably get worse, before it gets better.
