SPLOST to fund traffic signal on Sigman Road

CONYERS -- The City Council approved a contract for $912,265 with Pittman Construction Co. for intersection improvements on Sigman Road at Sarasota Parkway and East Park Drive.

Pittman was the low bidder among six bids received. The highest bid was for $1.1 million from E.R. Snell. The council approved the contract at its March 20 meeting.

Funding for the project will come from SPLOST revenues.

Brad Sutton, director of Public Works and Transportation for the city, said the project includes a traffic signal and left turn lanes. In addition, he said the project will "change the radiuses on the corners for each of the intersections so the truck traffic doesn't jump the curb and bust the curb up."

Sutton said work on the project is expected to start within 30 days and be completed in six to nine months, depending on the weather.

Sutton said the project was warranted by the amount and type of traffic on the roads, noting that Sigman carries a large amount of truck traffic that serves a number of industries in the area.
