CONYERS -- The long region losing streak for the Salem baseball team is over, and to do it, the Seminoles got a dominant pitching performance. Jason Howell and Ryan Read combined on a one-hitter and Salem won its first Region 8-AAAAA game 3-0 over Apalachee.
The southpaw Howell and Read, a right-hander, just missed tossing the program's third no-hitter and first since Jarrett Brown, now a sophomore at Georgia, victimized Apalachee in 2011.
Howell was dominant in picking up his second win of the season, tossing 4 innings of no-hit ball. In 2 innings, Read allowed just an infield hit in picking up his third save of the season.
Garrett Needham had three hits and two RBIs, and Alex Fernatt added a pair of hits and an RBI for Salem, which snapped a six-game losing streak and improved to 1-8 in league play and 9-10 overall.
"We did get the win, which is a step in the right direction," Salem coach Chad Kitchens said. "I look forward to getting back out to practice ... to correct some mistakes and keep improving with this young team."
