COVINGTON — Fall classes began at Georgia Perimeter College on Monday, and the Newton campus was filled with students searching for books, catching up with friends and listening to professors.

“The first day of the new academic year is always exciting at a college,” said GPC’s interim President Rob Watts. “Students are beginning a new chapter of their lives, and professors are glad to be back in the classroom again. There is a great deal of energy on the Newton campus.”

Enrollment was expected to remain hovered around 2,300 students on the Newton campus, this year. It serves students from Newton, Rockdale, Walton, Morgan and other counties.

The college, which is located off Ga. Highway 11, offers on-campus classes, as well as web-based ones.

The school is undergoing a few administrative changes this year with the welcoming of a new academic dean, Dr. Paulos Yohannes. Yohannes has worked at GPC since 1992 as a chemistry professor and later the dean of science. He’s also worked at Emory University and Life University.

Georgia Perimeter College, the largest state college in the University System of Georgia, serves approximately 24,000 students on four campuses, including Clarkston, Decatur, Dunwoody and Newton; it also has partnership sites in Newton and Rockdale Counties, as well as in Alpharetta.
