Heritage girls soccer team rolls past rival Rockdale

CONYERS — The Heritage girls soccer team completed a dominant week Friday. Faith Shelton had five goals and Sarah Boggus added three as the Patriots rolled past rival Rockdale, 10-0.

The game, which was played in wet conditions at Evans Memorial Stadium, ended by mercy rule with a minute left in the first half, the second time this week the Patriots have defeated a local rival before the opening half had concluded.

Friday, Shelton, who already has eight goals, had her outburst, and Boggus added her second hat trick of the young season, Kaley Wells picked up her sixth goal of the year and Jessica Walker completed the scoring.

“We had really good, crisp ball movement tonight, very pleased with that considering the poor field conditions,” said Heritage coach Chad Suddeth. “Obviously, we were able to get Faith loose several times. She’s going to win most one versus one situations and she certainly did that tonight.”

Heritage, a state quarterfinalist a year ago, is 3-0 in 2013, out scoring its

opponents — South Gwinnett and local rivals Newton and Rockdale — 26-0.

“Although we really haven’t been challenged yet, I think we are really playing well and are ahead of where I thought we would be,” Suddeth said. “Obviously I’m very pleased with the start to our season.”

Despite the high goal total, Rockdale freshman goalkeeper Joanna Morganelli made 18 saves.

The Heritage boys completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. Heritage has allowed just two goals in also starting 3-0.
