I-20 motorist killed by falling tree

CONYERS — A tree fell across Interstate 20 westbound Tuesday morning, killing a motorist and turning the interstate into a parking lot for morning commuters.

Rockdale County Sheriff's Office Investigator Michael Camp said a man was driving westbound near Sigman Road at about 6:30 a.m. when a tree fell across the roadway. Camp speculated that recent rainfall may have caused the tree, possibly a pine tree, to uproot and fall.

"The tree fell and crushed his truck," said Camp. "It landed perfectly on top of the cab."

The victim's name has not yet been released.

Camp said there were several chain-reaction accidents in the wake of the fatality, but there were apparently no serious injuries in those wrecks.

By 8 a.m. traffic on I-20 westbound was backed up past the Ga. Highway 138 exit and motorists were exiting at Salem Road to avoid the backup. Secondary roads like Sigman and Iris Drive were also jammed.

Utter incompetence that the sheriff's office didn't clear this within a half an hour! If it really is a freak accident, then there's even LESS reason to tie up the entire road "investigating." You deal with the survivors if any, then shove everything off the road. Use a bulldoze if necessary, and open the road. After that, the agencies can play detective all day long if they want. There is no excuse for blocking a major road like this!

There's no reason for you to be such a selfish idiot to blame the sheriff's department for doing their jobs. Someone lost their life today and I'm saddened as a OEF/OIF veteran that someone could think this way and be so selfish. The men and women of the Rockdale Sheriff's Department deserves respect versus criticism. I am sure you would have wanted an investigation done if it was one of your loved ones that lost their life. If the roads are blocked who cares, you can wait. I was there on the highway and waited patiently. That's the problem with so many people, lack of patience and respect for one another.

It's just that Clarkie is in such a critical career field, anything impeding his presence at his duty post could have devastating repercussions.

Besides, if he doesn't make it to his duty post, who will cook the French fries?

You must make these comments strictly for the reaction you get. You obviously know nothing about law enforcement and even less about our government in general. You like Marta and big city living so much....move back to Atlanta. We won't miss you.

Just so everyone is clear, this was a Co-Worker at our Company. We are devastated today by this news. We missed this gentleman this morning when he didn't show for work. He has been a loyal and precious addition here. He was employed for 34 years and we will miss him terribly. So don't make this a debate about the Sheriff's Department. This individual is loved and missed terribly!

you have to learn that Clark is all about himself and no one else. Just do like most of us and ignore him. He is good for a laugh every now and then though.

The shame here is that this happened. I wish GDOT had cleared those trees after the (several) fires in the area. They shouldn't even be that close anyway; why aren't the guidelines for "clear zones" followed by GDOT? None of the other states I travel in has trees growing as close to the Interstate as we do here.
