COVINGTON -- After holding graduation outside last school year, the Newton County School System once again will hold graduation ceremonies at a large church in Rockdale County.
NCSS officials recently posted its 2013 graduation information on its website, announcing that it will hold ceremonies over Memorial Day weekend at Springfield Baptist Church.
For the past several years, NCSS has held ceremonies at the same site on Iris Drive, which previously was home to Church in the Now. In May 2011, the graduations for all three Newton high schools were some of the last events held at CITN, which went into foreclosure in 2011.
Later, Rockdale County church Springfield Baptist Church purchased the property and began using it.
Springfield Baptist Church acquired the property in April 2012, after NCSS already decided to hold its ceremonies at Homer Sharp Stadium in March. It was first time they were held outside in many years, after previously holding them in school gyms.
Sherri Davis-Viniard, director of Public Relations for NCSS, said the cost of graduations is not yet finalized. In the past, graduation at CITN cost about $9,000, or $3,000 per graduation.
Newton High School's graduation is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday, May 24; Eastside's at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 25; and Alcovy's at 3 p.m. Saturday. Information about the number of tickets students will receive also is not yet available.
