CONYERS -- Rockdale County High School will have its track resurfaced, after its recent construction is finished.
The Rockdale County Board of Education approved last month the selection of Sunland Sports of Fayetteville as the contractor for the project.
"The track at Rockdale County High School was affected by activities associated with the construction of the new gymnasium and renovations to the old gymnasium requiring the track to be resurfaced," said Richard Autry, superintendent of Rockdale County Public Schools.
The low bid was $58,214 and will be paid for through SPLOST III funds. Three other bids ranged from nearly $63,000 to nearly $83,000.
Bowen & Watson of Toccoa completed the $10 million construction project that replaced part of the athletic facility at RCHS and added to the campus.
The project included the construction of a new gymnasium and renovation of the existing gymnasium into classrooms, administrative space, locker rooms and training rooms.
The existing gym was part of the original construction of the school in 1962.
The upper floor in the old gym was converted to classroom space with 17 rooms, including two science areas and an administrative space.
The project also included a new parking lot, four replacement tennis courts, stormwater retention areas, water quality improvements, a small two-story building adjacent to the track for stadium locker and weight rooms and a JROTC space, new stadium lighting and a new roof on the old gym.
The project also was funded through SPLOST funds.

If the construction work damaged the track, add it to the punchlist and have Bowen & Watson pick up the tab. $60K isn't much on a $10,000,000 job. It sounds like this is what should be done rather than wasting even more of the taxpayers' money.

That will make the stadium very nice. This school is really getting some good improvements. All of this will really help the teams at the school. We are blessed.

I am starting to believe the only thing in this county that we are good at is running to avoid being mugged or robbed. So, yes go ahead and fix the track. We need more practice.
