Students can register for enrichment camp

CONYERS -- Rockdale County students don't have to miss school over Winter Break next month. They can attend the Winter Enrichment Camp.

Rockdale County Public Schools' camp will be held from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, through Thursday, Feb. 21, during the break at the Rockdale Career Academy.

It is open to second- through eighth-grade students who are demonstrating high levels of academic achievement for the current school year, according to RCPS.

Eligible RCPS students should have received an invitation letter, and the camp also is open to home and private school students who live in Rockdale County and can demonstrate academic achievement in line with the Honor Roll or having all As and Bs.

At the camp, second-graders will study the Hawaiian Luau through art and culture. They will learn about traditions, make food like pineapple upside down cupcakes and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, create art, take hula dancing lessons, sing traditional Hawaiian folk songs and learn to speak the language of Hawaii. They will hold a luau-style dessert celebration on the final day of class.

Third-graders will learn about the Polar Adventure by exploring polar wildlife while making a penguin and a whale, learning about native Alaskan customs and creating an igloo.

Fourth-graders will participate in a class called Freaks of Nature, which will combine art and science. They will explore weather anomalies and climate and study weather patterns of tornados and hurricanes. They also will use technology to create videos of mock meteorology reports.

For fifth-graders, they will attend a class called WOW! World of Wonder. In it, they will conduct hands-on science experiments and learn technology facts.

Middle-schoolers will have the choice of attending two classes -- Cooking Up Culture and STEM Quest. In the cooking class, students will make and eat exotic foods, while in the other class, they will learn about science, technology, engineering and math while simultaneously learning about different parts of the world's design of historical buildings.

Alex Alvarez, Academic Rigor coordinator for RCPS, said parents can contact him regarding course seat availability until the registration deadline of Feb. 15.

Registration fees, which are $50, must be paid in cash at the Rockdale County Board of Education, which is located at 954 North Main St. in Conyers between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Feb. 1 through 15. Enrollment forms and class listings are available on the RCPS site, www.rockdale.k12.ga.us.

Enrichment Camp served more than 130 students over fall break.

"We are hoping to continue our growth trend in student participation with the Winter Enrichment Camp," Alvarez said.

RCPS has invited 1,386 elementary students and 944 middle school student to the winter camp, he said.

The camps are generally held over extended breaks throughout the school year and summer.
