Marjorie Rainey

A daughter of one of Newton County's early farming families, Marjorie Inez Adams Rainey, a long time Covington, GA homemaker, age 98, died peacefully at home in Marietta, GA on July 28, 2013. Mrs. Rainey was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Emory Lloyd "Too Tall" Rainey. She was born in Mansfield, GA to James Oscar Adams and Carrie Theresa Lasseter Adams, one of 12 children. She was a graduate of Mansfield High School and worked four years as a nurses aide at Scottish Rite Hospital before she married Mr. Rainey on October 15, 1939. Mr. and Mrs. Rainey were loyal members of the Covington First United Methodist Church where her love for children led her to volunteer for years in the church nursery and as a leader for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She served multiple times as Den Mother and in countless roles in support of her family. She was an active member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Georgia Elliot Circle. Mr. and Mrs. Rainey served as sterling Christian models as they raised 4 sons on the back pew of their church. Mrs. Rainey is survived by four sons, Dr. Joe Sharp Rainey and wife, Diane of McLean, VA; Rev. David Emory Rainey and wife, Letitia of Nashville, TN; James Lynn Rainey and wife, Diane of Marietta, GA; Mark Huie Rainey and wife, Lou Anne of Alpharetta, GA; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Marjorie journeyed through life with grace, dignity, and the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, equipped with steady values and an abiding faith in God. She left a lasting legacy as the epitome of a good woman, wife, and mother. If it were possible to earn ones way into heaven, she has most certainly done so, but she knows she is there by grace, reunited with an equally deserving husband.
