Rockdale schools to start up Monday

CONYERS — Around 16,000 students are expected to enter Rockdale County Public Schools next week.

After about a two-month summer break, teachers already have returned to their classrooms to prepare for students on Monday.

The new school year comes with few major changes from last year — the biggest change is dealing with a 170-day student calendar for next school year. It’s a 10-day reduction from a normal school year calendar, as well as a seven-day reduction for up to 200-day employees and an eight-day reduction for 200-plus day employees. The changes allow for a more than $4.1 million reduction in general fund expenditures to offset the $20 million budget shortfall that originally was projected for this school year.

Budget cuts also included the reduction of dozens of teachers, media clerks, intel positions and several other positions, in addition to an increased millage rate.

A few administrative positions also changed for this school year — Tiwon Toney transferred from principal at Peek’s Chapel Elementary School to principal at Shoal Creek Elementary School, and John Martin, who was assistant principal at Davis Middle School is the new principal of Peek’s Chapel. Nadine Campbell, who was a principal at a Macon elementary school, is now the principal of C.J. Hicks Elementary School.

Additionally, Shauna Miller, who was assistant principal at Shoal Creek, is the new Early Learning Center coordinator at the Rockdale Career Academy.

The first break for Rockdale County students and staff will be Sept. 2 for Labor Day, followed by a fall break from Oct. 7 through 11. They also will get breaks for Thanksgiving from Nov. 25 through 29 and winter holidays from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3.

After the new year, students and staff will get another break on Jan. 20 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. A winter break is scheduled from Feb. 17 through 21, and a spring break is scheduled from April 7 through 11.

A few teacher workdays also are scattered throughout the school year.

The last day of school for the 2013-14 school year for students is Friday, May 16. Teachers work until May 21.
