BOGART - With a perennial state playoff team like Heritage, sometimes a tie is more satisfying than a victory. Such was the case for Patriots’ coach Chad Suddeth after a 1-1 tie with North Oconee in non-region play Tuesday.
Ally Silvey fed Sarah Boggus and the freshman forward scored the tying goal with 20 minutes to play in the game. The defense, specifically Heritage’s, which surrendered just two shots on goal in the second half, did the rest.
For Suddeth, the draw was a much better performance than a 3-0 win over Habersham Central last weekend.
“Very proud overall of the performance, a lot sharper than we were Saturday at Habersham,” said Suddeth, whose team improved to 6-1-1 overall.
It was a scoreless game at halftime before the host Titans got their only game of the night with 30 minutes left, which Heritage keeper Mady Carter nearly saved.
“Mady almost made the save of the year, she got both hands on it and it trickled into the goal,” Suddeth said.
Heritage will try to stay unbeaten in region play when its hosts Flowery Branch Friday at 6:00 p.m. in a battle of 2-0 teams.
“(Tuesday) was a great tune up for us for Friday night,” said Suddeth.
Bulldogs sweep Druid Hills in tennis
The Rockdale tennis teams won a pair of matches with Druid Hills in Region 2-AAAAAA action Tuesday. The boys won 5-0, led by No. 1 singles Patrick Sanders (8-4 winner), No. 2 Trey Hull (8-2) and No. 3 Logan Hull (8-3), and the No. 1 doubles team of Bruce Mitchell and Abenet Adisu won 9-7 and No. 2 doubles team of Collin Shamley and Cameron Debro won 8-0.
In girl’s play, move-in Destiny Commodore, playing for Summer Walker, who was at a national tournament in Mobile, Alabama, won a forfeited match at No. 1 singles to get the Bulldogs rolling. No. 2 singles player Ciara Chesser won 8-1 and the No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford, who was back after a minor injury, and Sydney Norton picked up an 8-1 victory.
“(Bradford is) not pain-free, but she was able to go out there and play,” said Rockdale coach Stephen Sansing. “Assistant coach (Jimbo) Hull has really been working on (the entire team’s) volleys in practice and it’s really showing on the court.”
Rockdale continues region play with matches against Alcovy Wednesday.
