Air Force Airman Sydney L. Barber graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Barber is the daughter of Farrah Hayes of Covington, and granddaughter of Rochelle Griffin-Thomas of Columbus. She is a 2011 graduate of Newton High School.

Jovonni Edwards

Army Pvt. Jovonni M. Edwards has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Edwards is the son of Nicole Holden of Covington. He is a 2010 graduate of Eastside High School.

Nikolas Sims

Army Pvt. Nikolas L. Sims has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Sims is the son of Nikki and Maurice Sims of Conyers. He is a 2012 graduate of Heritage High School.

Thomas M. Usry

Army Pvt. Thomas M. Usry has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Usry is the son of William and Donna Usry of Conyers. He is a 2012 graduate of Heritage High School.
