CONYERS -- The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office arrested a 26-year-old Oxford man on drug charges last week following a traffic stop on Interstate 20.
Kevin Arthur Cote, of 1400 Cornish Mountain Church Road, Oxford, was arrested March 20 and charged with possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance with intent to distribute, fleeing and attempting to elude an officer, failure to maintain lane and possession of a Schedule IV controlled substance.
An RCSO deputy reported that he saw Cote driving a white Ford Thunderbird in an erratic fashion north on Ga. Highway 138 at about 11 p.m. The deputy attempted a traffic stop with lights and siren, but the Thunderbird headed eastbound on I-20. As the deputy followed the suspect's vehicle, he reported that he saw the driver leaning over into the front passenger area.
Cote eventually stopped his car near the Salem Road exit. While talking to Cote, the deputy reportedly saw Cote's young son asleep in the back seat. The deputy also saw papers, a wallet and money scattered all over the front passenger seat and floorboard and what appeared to be marijuana residue on the gear shift. In addition, several closed knives were on the passenger seat.
Another deputy was called to the scene and Cote's vehicle was searched. Inside the center console a plastic bag containing 14 suspected Xanax pills was found. A black digital scale was found in the passenger floor board.
Cote was arrested and taken to the Rockdale County Jail. During a search at the jail, a clear bag containing suspected cocaine was found on his person, according to the report. Cote was also charged with crossing guardlines with drugs.
Cote's son was turned over to the child's mother.
In other news, a man and woman were arrested by the RCSO March 20 after they were found allegedly attempting to steal scrap from a vacant house on Abbott Road.
A deputy was dispatched to the house after a woman called to say a white Chevrolet truck was parked on the property and didn't belong there. The woman said her late mother had lived in the house.
While the deputy was talking with the complainant, a man and woman climbed down some stairs that led to the upstairs of an old wooden barn on the property. The man and woman were described as being very dirty. "When asked what were they doing here on the property, they stated they were up in the building having sex," according to the deputy's report.
Items found disturbed on the property included supply lines to the AC unit that had been cut and stolen, wiring pulled away from the side of the house, a wheel barrow under the shed that contained rusted metal pieces, and wiring on some farm equipment that was cut and laying on the ground. Some black cast iron that belonged the late owner of the house was found on the back of the pickup truck, according to the report.
The suspects, identified as Emily Elizabeth Tomasaucks, 25, of 3690 Klondike Road, Lithonia, and Charles Dustin Strickland, 37, of 5583 Raintree Trace, Oakwood, were arrested and taken to jail. Both face charges of burglary and loitering and prowling.
