CONYERS - Peter Yates is once again a wrestling All-American. The Salem graduate and redshirt-senior at Virginia Tech recently finished fourth at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, the second consecutive season the 165-pounder has achieved All America status.
Yates, who prior to the NCAAs was named the Atlantic Coast Conference wrestler of the year, finished his final season in Blacksburg 34-3. In the national semi finals, third-seeded Yates was pinned by Penn State’s David Taylor, the No. 2 seed in 3:24, but fought back to win a 12-2 major decision over Iowa State’s Michael Moreno in the consolation bracket, then dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 4 seed Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma State in the third-place match.
Yates leaves Virginia Tech as a two-time ACC champion (2012 and 2013) and second on the school’s all-time win list with 131, just two behind Sean Gray, who won 133 matches from 1997-2003.
