CONYERS -- The sprinkler system inside Dart Container on Ga. Highway 138 apparently extinguished a machinery fire Thursday afternoon.
Rockdale Fire-Rescue public information officer Lt. Chris Kozikowski said firefighters were called to the manufacturing facility at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday where they found smoke and water flow from the sprinkler system, but no flames.
"It must have been a fire at some point, but I believe the actual flames were extinguished mainly by the sprinkler system," Kozikowski said. "We did do a little cooling of the machinery with our water lines after we were able to get power cut off."
Kozikowski said power remained off on Friday until Dart officials could confirm that it was safe to resume operations.
"As of right now they are just wanting to make sure everything is safe before they re-energize the equipment," Kozikowski said Friday afternoon.
He said plant officials stressed that there were no injuries as a result of the fire. He said all plant employees were safely evacuated in keeping with monthly training they receive.
