COVINGTON -- The Newton County Sheriff's Office was able to make short work of apprehending some armed robbers Saturday after an alert victim furnished them with the culprits' tag number.
Rockdale County residents Karlos Blake Washington, 23, and Zekelia Samone Sanders, 24, both of 4404 Harvest Grove Lane were arrested and charged with armed robbery and cruelty to children in the third degree. Washington was also found to be wanted out of DeKalb County for child support default.
According to NCSO Capt. Keith Crum, a 25-year-old mother was in the parking lot of the Summerset apartment complex around 7:30 a.m. and was in the process of placing her toddler in her vehicle when she was approached from behind by a male.
"He shoved an object in her back which she believed to be a gun and ordered her to the ground. She complied and he took her purse," Crum said.
The victim later told authorities she saw him run to the passenger side of a gray Dodge Durango being driven by a black female and the car sped away.
"The victim jumped in her car and was able to catch up to the suspect's vehicle and got the tag number, called 911 and at that time quit following," Crum said.
When deputies arrived, they learned the tag was registered to an individual who lived at a Rockdale County residence.
"We notified the Conyers Police Department and the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office and when units went there, they learned they did not live there, but they were able to determine that they lived on Harvest Grove Lane in the Harvest Grove apartment complex," Crum said.
Investigators staked out the residence and later that afternoon were able to make contact with a black male in the parking lot matching the description the robbery victim had given.
"He was arrested and the female inside the apartment was arrested. Also, a 4-year-old child was there," Crum said. "They were all transported to the Newton County Sheriff's Office and while waiting for the grandmother to pick up the child, the child spontaneously made the statement that his daddy took the purse. The child was in the car at the time of the robbery."
The victim and her child were unhurt. The purse was not recovered.
