COVINGTON — A Conyers man faces charges in a three-vehicle crash that resulted in two fatalities and three injuries around 3:30 a.m. today on Interstate 20 eastbound near mile marker 87 in Newton County.
The interstate was closed until about 8 a.m. as troopers with the Georgia State Patrol worked the accident, according to GSP Trooper Gordy Wright
The next of kin have not been notified on the fatalities at this time, Wright said.
According to the investigating trooper, a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic ran out of fuel and was stopped on the south shoulder of the interstate. A 1997 Toyota Camry had stopped to assist the driver of the Sonic and was stopped in the right travel lane.
A 2004 Jeep Patriot, being driven by Kevin Poynter, 28, from Conyers, struck the Camry in the rear and sideswiped the Sonic. A pedestrian between the Sonic and the Camry was killed and a passenger in the Camry also died in the crash, Wright reported.
Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor and blood was drawn from Poynter for analysis. Charges will be filed against Poynter, according to the GSP. The crash remains under investigation.
