CONYERS — Rockdale County’s proposed general fund budget for 2014 includes $913,410 for Nancy Guinn Library, the same amount budgeted for 2013 and 2012.
Charlotte Gellert, an appointed member of the volunteer library board of trustees, spoke to commissioners during public comment at their meeting Tuesday, thanking the county for its support.
Gellert outlined the following facts about library usage in the past year in the community:
• 313,236 — The number of times books, ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, park and zoo passes, power meters and other items were checked out in the past year.
• 5,725 — The number of library users who attended more than 139 programs, like the Manifold Greatness exhibit; developmentally centered programs supporting babies, toddlers, preschoolers, school-age children, and young adults; computer classes; and programs on job readiness and job searching.
• 115,774 — The number of times that library computers and wireless service were accessed. The library provides computer access for many who cannot afford home computers or Internet access; wireless access for personal mobile devices; and access to online resources like Mango Languages, Reference USA, GALILEO, Tumble Books and Job Accelerator.
• 54 — The number of hours the library is open each week. “With support from Rockdale County, the library provides a space for writers circles and other community groups to use a study room; a place for families to meet up after activities across the county; a place to sit and read the paper and we even provide the seat and a newspaper.
“And in the last three months there have been over 53,000 visits to the library and almost 2,000 new library cards issued,” Gellert added. “And with your support we can continue to add value to the community.”
