COVINGTON — There was little doubt that Luella put on a show in the boys Region 2-AAAAAA semifinals game with dunks and 3-point shots. Unfortunately, it came at Rockdale’s expense as the Lions advanced to the championship game today at 8:30 p.m. with their 74-58 win on Monday.
Luella will play Newton for the region championship, but more importantly the No. 1 seed heading into the Class AAAAAA tournament, with Rockdale facing Lovejoy at 5:30 p.m. in the consolation finals.
Rockdale held the lead late in the second quarter before the Lions went on a 13-2 run taking a 32-22 lead with a minute left in the first half. Rockdale finished the half closing the gap giving Luella a 35-27 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs could have scored a few more points if not for Luella’s 7-foot junior center Doral Moore who blocked eight shots in the first half. Moore finished the game with 11 blocks.
The Lions continued to extend their lead, 53-42, through the fourth quarter before Luella went on a 18-2 run within a two minute period. During that time, Moore had two dunks including one on a putback following a missed free-throw. Adding to the dramatics was University of South Carolina bound TeMarcus Blanton who had a 360-dunk.
Moore and Blanton were in double-digit scoring with 13 and 15 points. Andre Banton paced the Lions on the scoreboard with 16 points.
Rockdale’s Jalen Jordan led all scorers with 27 points with Darryl Tucker adding 10 points.
